NNGBEK (KE)
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Anyone
that’s been around the competition circuit will know that an English
Championships is not an English Championships unless certain squads are
there taking part. The 2008 NNGBEK (KE) English National
Championships, although organised at short notice, saw some quality
karate from some of England’s top associations, as can be seen from the
results table.
The Harvey Hadden Sports Centre provided its usual excellent service and
the local air ambulance and paramedics fortunately did not have too much
to do during the day.
The officials, led by FEKO Chief Referee Rob Philips, worked tirelessly
and were pleased to receive a contribution towards their expenses,
though this could not reflect the effort they put in. Well done to all
of them!!
Tournament co-organisers Abdu Shaher and Ian Cuthbert are old hands at
this but came up with a fantastic new look., with all events being
played off in pool systems similar to the Football European Champions
League or World Cup. This meant that a competitor who has
travelled up from Bournemouth (as many had) paying for petrol and
accommodation, did not run the risk of being knocked out in the first
round having had just one fight or bout of kata. The pool system meant
that everyone had at least three or four bouts to reach the knockout
stage of each category.
The feeling around the hall was definitely that this was terrific value
for money.
Fighters want fights and kata people want to perform kata , the more the
better.
There were notable kata performances from KUGB competitors such as
Rebecca and Joseph Rawcliffe and Hisham Saif who took Gold in the Girl’s
under 16 category, Men’s Seniors and Boy’s 14-15 respectively.
FEKO showed they had a real trooper in the form of Mandy Read who took
Gold in the Ladies' Senior kata, Gold in Ladies team and silver in the
ladies over 60k sections; a tremendous haul for one day’s work!
Ian Cuthbert’s SHIKON squad showed their usual strength in depth and
topped the medals table winning the Men’s team kumite along with the
Men’s heavyweight, middleweight, openweight and team sections, with
Danny Hollister being responsible for three Golds on his own.
The Men’s lightweight sections were dominated by Abdu Shaher’s BKO
competitors and appropriately Vic Charles’s BSKA seemed to get more
success in the heavyweight sections thanks to the usual excellent
coaching from Jeff Bottomley.
All in all a good day with the promise of bigger and better to come.
Many thanks go to our all star line up of Karate dignitaries, Bob
Poynton, Brian Philcox, Alan Carruthers, Molly Samuel, Ossie Rowe etc
etc for their support.
The results will be added to the Karate Sport England ranking lists.
